Introduction: in which our hero introduces himself

Welcome to my first blog. What follows will be a highly eclectic series of observations on life, the universe and everything. To introduce myself, I am a father of four, left-of-center, ex-math professor with interests ranging from classical music to artificial intelligence and an abstract games fanatic. Being my own personal blog, you will hear endless descriptions of the world's best wife and an amazing set of children.

Having left the halls of academe more than a dozen years ago, I am a software engineer specializing in database and image processing. I have a professional interest in image and video processing and compression, and a personal interest from long back in complexity and the myriad ways that computation theory and physics interact. For example, the central question in compression is just how many bytes really are in that picture.

I will try to update the list periodically with what is going on in my life, thoughts on the universe, or interesting tidbits picked up elsewhere. If anyone wants to contribute tidbits in a similar vein they are most welcome.
